74HC165PW 118 is an 8-bit serial or parallel input/serial output shift register. When PL\ is high, the data enters the register serially at DS. When the clock enable input is low, the data will shift when the CP input transitions from low to high. A high level on CE\ will disable the CP input. The input includes a clamping diode, which makes it possible to use a current-limiting resistor to connect the input to a voltage above VCC.
